The 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia features the largest number of women’s soccer teams from eight countries, including hosts Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Myanmar, Singapore, Laos, and Myanmar. The Cambodian women’s soccer team is in Group B with Thailand, Singapore and Laos, while Group A features Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia, but Indonesia withdraws, leaving Group A with only four teams left.
The Cambodian SEA Games has eight teams participating, which is more than any other SEA Games. The 31st SEA Games in Vietnam had seven teams, the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines had six teams and the 29th SEA Games in Malaysia had five teams.
At the 31st SEA Games in Vietnam, the hosts won gold, silver for the Thai women’s team and bronze for the Philippines. In the SEA Games, the Vietnamese women’s team won the most medals with a total of 10 gold, 7 silver, 2 silver and 1 bronze, followed by the Thai team with a total of 12 medals, including 5 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze.
The women’s football event was included in the first Southeast Asian Games in 2001, with teams competing in a number of countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Cambodia has prepared two stadiums for the women’s event: Smart RSN Stadium and the Old Stadium. The Smart RSN Stadium can hold 5,000 fans, while the old stadium can hold 8,000. The 32nd SEA Games will officially open on May 5, 2023 at the Moradok Techo National Stadium.
