Ramos overtakes former Real Madrid team-mate to set Champions League record

September 21, 2023
Despite not training for the best part of the three months before joining Sevilla, Sergio Ramos returned to his former club easily. He started the win over Las Palmas on Sunday and he was also awarded for the Los Nervionenses' Champions League opener against Lens on Wednesday. It was a great opportunity for Ramos not only because he represented his childhood club in the most prestigious games of European football.

In fact, it is the 138th time the 37-year-old has started in the Champions League, a Spanish record. According to Relevo Ramos, he overtook his Real Madrid teammate Raul Gonzalez between 2005 and 2010 to become the most prolific Spanish player in the European Cup / Champions League.

Ramos will be hoping he can close this crucial opportunity by helping Sevilla get their 2023-24 Champions League season off to a great start. However, the lens will not be easy, although it has rarely been shown in competition over the years.
