Mason Greenwood told friends that he was no longer playing for Man Utd.

The striker assumed that he would return, in the wake of an attempted rape and rape charge dropped in February.

But he faced opposition from women’s sides and a number of teammates.

The club spent 12 weeks investigating a 21-year-old player who was not close to the inclusion of the initial team.

Greenwood, who last played 15 months ago, has now resigned to try to resume his career abroad.

A source said:

“Mason believes he has finished his career at United; he sat at home alone and looked very difficult.

He wants to play football back but knows his situation is complicated and it is his own fault.

He is determined to play football again, but doesn’t think he will wear a United shirt again.”
